Smart Fish Farm Management System for a New Era

With the advancement of information technology, Taiwan's aquaculture industry has shifted from a labor-intensive industry to a technology-intensive one and then to smart aquaculture. Ever Spring Marine Aquaculture Co. Ltd has developed the “Smart Aquaculture IoT Management Platform” and the “Smart Bird Deterrent Unmanned Vehicle System” to improve the breeding efficiency and reduce the damage to baby fish by birds.

class='img_caption'Schematic diagram of the Smart Aquaculture IoT Management Platform

The Smart Aquaculture IoT Management Platform includes four functional blocks: fishpond management, report management, content management, and authority management. The system has sensors for water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH and has integrated IoT technology to automatically record the aquaculture environment and water quality data. The real-time monitoring data graphs allow an operator to instantly view the condition of the fishpond, and with the integration of intelligent analysis technology and the automatic waterwheel control mechanism, the operator can easily carry out smart environment monitoring and control the fishponds. Based on rough estimation, using this system to replace manual recording can reduce labor time by 15%. In addition, through monitoring the environmental values of the ponds, as well as environmental monitoring and subsequent automatic water wheels, the loss of fish due to diseases may be reduced by about 5%. As a result, the platform effectively increases production yield and output value.

Moreover, by working with the experts of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, we have developed the Smart Bird Deterrent Unmanned Vehicle System based on the integration of Internet of Things, unmanned vehicle technology and aquaculture experience. The automatic drone patrolling system can not only save more manpower and time required by manual operation of the drones but also avoid the inhuman bird killing, traditionally adopted by the aquaculture industry in handling bird damage. We expect this system to reduce the loss of fish due to bird damage by 10% and save the manpower required for setting up bird nets near the fishponds by 2% so that the yield and productivity can be improved.

Through the assistance of the Smart Agriculture Program, Ever Spring Marine Aquaculture combines Internet of Things, unmanned vehicles, smart analysis and other Information and Communications Technology to improve its level of informatization, environmental automatic monitoring and smart analysis in aquaculture. It can quickly integrate the information in the process, and the replacement of hardcopy records to electronic records also turns the high manpower process to a semi-automatic process. In the year after the completion of the program, the historical data will be analyzed through smart analysis, which will help effective transformation of the industry and improve the human errors in the traditional decision-making process, pushing the aquaculture industry forward towards full automation.
